As you know, FAAN has been working on behalf of you and your children to
make American schools safer for children with food allergy. A vitally
needed piece of legislation has been working its way through the Congress
since late 2005, and in recent weeks there has been a new development.

But, we are almost out of time! After the upcoming elections, Congress
will meet only briefly to complete unfinished work.

The Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Management Act of 2006 (S.3980), which
will help assure that schools can safely manage students with life-
threateni ng foo d allergies, has one last chance to pass into law this
year. We need your help in urging your Senators to make it happen. All it
will take is a phone call.

Please take a minute to find out what you can do to help get this bill
passed into law this year.

Go to www.foodallergy.org/calltoaction.html to learn more about the
bill and how you can help convince your senators to support it.

Thanks for your support!

Remember, we are all in this together.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS! We are VERY excited to have Kim Koeller be our speaker for the upcoming Monday, November 13th, 2006 MOCHA meeting. We will have all of our info out on tables for you to look at from 7:00-7:15PM. Kim will begin her presentation at 7:15. If you are new- you can also bring your $25 Dues made out to MOCHA at that time. (Mark that you are new on the check.) We will have time for questions after Kim’s presentation. This meeting is worth the drive if you are from another group. We hope to see many of you there. In the mean time- stay safe and have fun getting ready for Halloween. My latest idea: (Put together all those McDonald’s/Burger King little toys that you step on into a big cauldron and when the little kids come and trick or treat let them take as many as they want!)

The next meeting of MOCHA-Chicago will be Tuesday, October 17, 2006, 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the CMH Outpatient Center, 2515 N. Clark Street, Deming Building-7th floor conference room.

The topic will be: “An evening with MOCHA-Chicago medical advisor, Jennifer Kim, M.D.” Dr. Kim will discuss current information on the prevalence of food allergy, the impact of a food allergy diagnosis on lifestyle, and other relevant topics.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinal published a lengthy article on food allergies on Oct. 3:

“The danger in dining: With food allergies, it’s children who are most at risk, and cases appear to be rising”

Be sure to check out the “Resources” sidebar, which links to other related articles.

“Food Allergies in the Real World” (faanteen.org/) “is designed for young adults who want to take a more active role in managing their food allergies.”

Of particular interest is the 1st Annual FAAN Teen Summit to be held November 4 and 5 in Arlington, VA.

From MOCHA Mom Suzanne Mahoney comes this about Krispy Kremes:

Last year I looked into Krispy Kreme to see if a mom could bring them to my daughter’s class for a treat. I called and spoke with someone and also received a similar letter stating they they do not knowingly add nut product to he ingredients. However, they could not be sure that some cross contamination had not occurred where the ingredients were produced. I figured they were covering their behind.

I went on their web site and I believe it was under the Canadian part of the web site that listed all the ingredients. I found out that ingredients such as crushed graham cracker crumbs are added to give crunch instead of nuts. Things that may look like nuts are not.

I then called the exact location where the mom was to purchase the donuts. The counter representative I spoke with had worked there for many years. She told me that they decided to make all of their products nut free.

I allowed the donuts to be brought to class. I almost went to photograph my daughter eating her first donut and first commercial bakery good. It turns out she didn’t like them!!
