MOCHA’s Cheat & Eat dinner group will be meeting on Monday, October 23 at 7pm. We are going to try something new this month. We will be going to Panera Bread for dinner, snacks, or just to hang out with the group.

This is a great way to meet other members and speak to them one on one.

The Panera we will be at is across the street from Old Orchard shopping center. It is on the north east corner of Golf and Skokie roads, at 9611 Skokie Blvd., Skokie, 60077. It is next to the Walter E. Smithe furniture store. The phone number is 847-679-9156.

From Our Stolen Future:

The prevalence of allergic reactions has been increasing rapidly in the developed world for the last several decades. This has been happening during a period when overall air quality has been improving and during which there is no reason to believe that allergens like dust mites or cockroach dandruff have become more common. These observations have led some scientists to propose that unidentified environmental exposures may be increasing the sensitivity of people’s immune system, leading to heightened allergic responses even though the level of allergens hasn’t increased.

In this paper, Takano et al. provide a clue as to a possible cause of this increase, reporting that exposure to low, environmentally-relevant levels of the phthalate DEHP exacerbates allergic reactions in mice to a dust mite allergen.

They conclude that exposure to DEHP may be contributing to the increased incidence of allergic reactions in developing countries, where phthalate exposure is now ubiquitous.

Dear AllergyKids Friends-

To help identify your AllergyKid for Halloween, we are giving away a FREE AllergyKids tag with every purchase at www.allergykids.com. Attach the AllergyKids tag to your child’s Halloween bag when he is trick or treating so that he can quickly and easily be identified as a child with food allergies.

AllergyKids’ Halloween tips are also available to help you and your child’s teacher create a safe classroom environment for your AllergyKid during this year’s Halloween parties. Tips for Trick or Treating are also included.

At AllergyKids, our goal is to create universal awareness of children with life threatening food allergies in order to prevent accidental allergic reactions.

MOCHA Mom Julie G. had this to say about her family’s participation in the Food Allergy Study:

[We] participated in the study last month. [Our daughter] had to have her own clinical tests, so the did them at the same time as the study. Angela worked with Christine and Dr. Kim at Children’s to get everything in order before we showed up. I have to say, the entire process was amazing! Angela and all the other nurses, Aimee, Madonna, and another woman who’s name I can’t remember, were so wonderful. [Our daughter] normally cries the entire time we’re at any doctor’s office. During out 2 hours at the study though, she only cried during the blood draw, skin test and blood pressure check. The rest of the time she played with the nurses, laughed, watched Blue’s Clues and seemingly had a great time. The nurses did everything they could to keep her entertained, comfortable and to garner trust. I wish all doctors were as wonderful as they. I’m so happy we were able to participate in the study and thought it went better than we ever could have hoped.

Starting November 8th, the Glenbrook Hospital in Glenview will be able to accomodate the Children’s Memorial Allergy Study.

So….no more excuses for driving downtown.

As you know, FAAN has been working on behalf of you and your children to
make American schools safer for children with food allergy. A vitally
needed piece of legislation has been working its way through the Congress
since late 2005, and in recent weeks there has been a new development.

But, we are almost out of time! After the upcoming elections, Congress
will meet only briefly to complete unfinished work.

The Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Management Act of 2006 (S.3980), which
will help assure that schools can safely manage students with life-
threateni ng foo d allergies, has one last chance to pass into law this
year. We need your help in urging your Senators to make it happen. All it
will take is a phone call.

Please take a minute to find out what you can do to help get this bill
passed into law this year.

Go to www.foodallergy.org/calltoaction.html to learn more about the
bill and how you can help convince your senators to support it.

Thanks for your support!

Remember, we are all in this together.
